When animating, do everything you can to lighten your file and optimize your scene’s interaction and playback. This could involve hiding props in your environment, hiding xgen (hair/cloth), hiding clothing, unloading textures or extra characters, etc. Ideally you want to have real-time manipulation and playback so the best gut check is to see how close your scene is playing to 24 frames per second. To display frame rate, make sure you are in the “Animation” shelf, then go to Display > Heads up Display > and check “Frame Rate.” You will then be able to see your scene’s frame rate in the bottom right hand corner of your viewport.
If your speed is super optimized and you’re seeing playback over 24fps, you can set your scene to always play at 24fps by adjusting the playback settings. First click the time slider settings button in the bottom right corner:
Then adjust your Framerate to 24fps and your Playback speed to 24 fps x 1 (instead of “Play every frame”).
